Blair was hanging by his fingertips. The metal beam he was clinging to was slippery.
"JIIIMM!!! HELP ME!" Blair screamed desperately. He looked down into the darkness ... the bottomless darkness.
Far away a voice echoed, "I'm Coming!! Hang On Buddy!!"
Oh thank God! "HURRY JIM!!!"
"Blair, I'm here!" Jim said.
Blair looked around, but couldn't see Jim anywhere. "WHERE ARE YOU?! I CAN'T SEE YOU!"
"I'm right here!"
"JIM, I'M SLIPPING! HELP ME!" Blair screamed in panic. He thought he felt Jim's hands, but he still couldn't see him. "DON'T LET ME FALL!!" It felt as though Blair's fingers were being pried off the beam, but there was no one there.
"Blair, let go!" Jim called to him. "I've got you Chief. I won't let you fall."
It sounded as if Jim was right there, speaking softly into his ear.
"I'm here Blair. I won't let you fall," Jim said. "Just let go so I can pull you up."
Blair felt his hands slip from the beam, and for a split second felt himself falling. With a gasp, Blair's eyes shot open. "JIM!"
"Shh, it's okay now. You're awake," Jim whispered. He was sitting on Blair's bed, holding the young man from behind, tight against his chest.
Blair was gasping, damp with sweat, and shaking. "Don't let me fall! Please!" he called out groggily, still not completely awake.
Jim pushed the sweat-dampened hair off of Blair's pale face, "You're not falling Chief. You're safe."
Blair blinked, looking around the room ... his room. The light on the bedside table was dim in the darkness. "Jim?"
"You awake now buddy?" Jim asked softly.
Blair relaxed back into Jim, as strong arms held him. "Yeah Jim, I'm awake."
"That was a hell of a dream Chief. I came in, and you were clinging to the headboard."
"I was trying not to fall," Blair whispered. "I was trying to hang on 'til you could help me."
Jim pushed the pillow up behind him, and leaned back against the headboard, taking his unprotesting Guide with him. "Did I get there in time?"
Blair settled in, resting his head on Jim's shoulder. "Yeah Jim, you caught me ... just in time."
